Autumn is, hands down, my favorite season. Winter is a very close second, but Autumn…it’s just perfect. Crisp, colored leaves that crunch satisfyingly when you walk on them. Cool air that falls in that perfect temperature range. Some good thunderstorms that create the perfect setting for reading scary books. Some pretty, delicate rainy days to set the scene for poetry.
The clothes. Oh, the fall clothes. Warm enough that you don’t need to be bundled up into a human-sized lump, but cool enough that you can wear the cozy sweaters, the adorable boots. You can do layers, you can whip out the flannel, and you can still pair some summer dresses with tights.
Color-wise, I’m a jewel-toned girl. Crimson red, deep purple, mustard yellow. And those colors are on every fall color palette. My go-to neutral is actually black – but in Autumn, that rich chocolate brown calls my name.
And then there’s the Autumn cuisine. It just started feeling like fall here a week ago, but at the first signs, I was at the store buying the ingredients for chili. This week, I’m making macaroni and cheese – haven’t had it for a year, because…Italy, but darn it, it’s Autumn and I want my comfort foods! French onion soup, chili, mac and cheese, pot pies, grilled cheese, caramel apples, spice cake! Makes my mouth water. Sure, you can eat them at other times of the year – and I do – but it’s not the same. It’s cool enough for hot chocolate, tea, coffee to became main staples. Color-wise, I’m a jewel-toned girl. Think about fall activities. Pumpkin carving, apple picking, weekends in the mountains. Watching the season premieres of your favorite television shows. Back to school shopping, with notebooks and pens and that school/office supply smell.
Maybe it’s just me, but I associate different animals with different seasons, too. Fall is all about foxes and deer and hedgehogs. Owls and raccoons. I mean, I love all animals – but I could look at pictures of owls and foxes all day long.
Plus, two of my favorite holidays are in fall. Halloween and Thanksgiving! Candy and fun costumes, then all the food you can eat and the parade! I mean really, what’s bad about fall?
So today is the first day of fall – it’s finally here, and I am ALL about autumn. Make the most of it!
